Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

This information just arrived from Marilyn Murphy, district supervisor for the Mendocino District of California State Parks:

California State Parks announced today that the Pudding Creek Trestle reconstruction project is finished and the bridge will be open this Friday, November 16, just in time for the holiday season.

Pudding Creek TrestleAs of 4:00 p.m. on Friday, it will be possible to walk from Fort Bragg along the historic Georgia Pacific timber hauling road all the way to Ten Mile River. The bridge will be open to pedestrians and bicyclists who no longer will have to share Highway One with cars and trucks just to get to the coast and MacKerricher State Park north of town.

In turn, residents and visitors north of Fort Bragg will now have a pleasant alternative to driving into town. Fort Bragg’s history, shopping, services and restaurants will be just a pleasant walk or bicycle excursion away.

Dine-Out for Your Favorite Charity
Sunday, November 11th, 2007

On Wednesday, November 14, you can support the Mendocino Land Trust and have a fabulous meal by attending Dine-Out Night at the MacCallum House Inn and Restaurant in Mendocino.

Dine-outs are an ongoing series of dining fundraisers hosted by MacCallum House Inn & Restaurant to support our community. The concept is very simple; MacCallum House donates all of the proceeds to the non-profit organization it’s honoring for that evening. The dine-out is an amazingly clever way to capture a donation for a well-deserving charity from both tourists and locals.

MacCallum House hosted their first dine-out in 2004; it was a St. Patrick’s Day event for KOZT. Jed explains, “We have tried to make it part of our culture and now do several events every month during the slower season. It is a great way for us to connect with the community. We have done dine-out’s for so many different organizations I have lost track.” But as Jed rattles off the names, I could tell there were not many missing from the list.

There are lots of dine-outs coming up, taking us through the holidays, such as the Mendocino Coast Humane Society, College of the Redwoods Community Choir and Project Sanctuary. With more to come in 2008!

Many thanks to MacCallum House for sponsoring so many community activities. MendocinoFun.com is also doing our part by listing these events on our Calendar of Events. You can do your part. Get together a group of friends to celebrate the holiday season and give to your favorite charity at the same time.

The MacCallum House (45020 Albion Street, Mendocino) will be serving their regular menu on November 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  Please make your reservation as soon as possible by calling 937-5763.

Local Licks Live 14 in Ft Bragg on Saturday, Nov 10!
Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Logo for Local Licks Live 14 by the Coast KOZTHaving traveled across the US (especially the Southwest and West) by car a lot, I have to say it’s always amazing to find a great radio station in a small town. In fact, it’s exceedingly rare — but we have such a rarity here. The Coast (KOZT at FM 95.3 or 95.9 or over the Web at www.kozt.com) has been broadcasting the music and the news and the power outage notices and everything else for years now, while winning multiple Crystal and Marconi awards in the last few years. Owners Tom Yates and Vicky Watts are huge supporters of the community in a lot of ways, and they keep people in touch with events happening in the area. Trust me, when the power goes out during a wild storm, every radio is tuned to the Coast for their frequent detailed updates on the situation directly from PG&E! And when the power’s on, they’re rocking out and talking about happenings in the community.

One of the features at the Coast for 14 years is Local Licks — a chance for local musicians to get their music on the air for free on Wednesday nights. This Saturday, November 10, 2007, the Coast is producing Local Licks Live 14, showcasing acoustic performances by local musicians: Acoustic Serenade, Coast Celtic Band, The Freys, David Hayes, and Holly Tannen. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. The show starts at 7:30 pm at Cotton Auditorium in Fort Bragg, located at the corner of Fir and Harold streets. The proceeds from the show go to benefit music in local schools.

The Coast KOZT radio on the Mendocino CoastYou can find out more about the LLL XIV show on the Coast Web site, and you can even check out their live feed over the Web. Tom and Vicky and their crew are accomplished radio people who left major markets in the Bay Area and L.A. to live up here, and the quality of their work and commitment to the area are evident in everything they do.
