I have had the delightful assignment of doing the publicity shots for the Mendocino Chamber Opera’s latest performance, The Tender Land. The Tender Land’s music was written by Aaron Copland with libretto by Erik Johns. The Chamber Opera has done a magnificent job of presenting this tidy little opera. The staging and lighting is wonderful, letting the magnificent cast carry off the story with feeling and beauty. The nice thing about this opera is that it is in English and totally understandable. It is the story of two itinerant workers who finagle jobs helping with the harvest at a small farm in the midwest. One of the workers, Martin, falls in love with Laurie, the doted upon (and smothered) granddaughter of the farmer, much to the farmer’s distress. The story is real, not like many of the classic opera tales which are absurd, but beautiful. Copland demands superb voice control and the cast pulls it off. Plus there is a wonderful dance scene involving the whole cast.

The show runs from this Friday through the following weekend at Helen Schoeni Theater (MTC). I think you will enjoy it. Call 937-4477 or 937-1018 for reservations.

Weekend Fun – Raining or Not!
Sunday, February 8th, 2009 by nancy

Next weekend is one of those blips that awake us from our winter doldrums. It’s Valentine’s Day and a holiday weekend, so it’s a good excuse and a little extra time to explore the Coast.

We’re in the midst of the amazing Grey Whale migration, which you can enjoy from shore or at sea. Whale exhibits are at Ford & Kelley House in Mendocino and at MacKerricher State Park in Fort Bragg. In addition to the beautiful flowers blooming, the scale model train is running at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. Crab season is also in full swing, so you can enjoy a multitude of crab dishes at local restaurants or buy fresh crab from the boats in Noyo Harbor. Mendocino celebrates the Chinese New Year with a parade and the annual fund-raiser dinner for the Kwan Tai Temple. Of course, there are Valentine’s Day restaurant and lodging specials, plus annual fund-raisers such as the Kiwanis Diamond Dinner. For activities with less calories, there are poetry readings and an artist open house.  Come out an enjoy a fun-filled weekend on the Coast. (Event details are posted on our Current Events page.)
