I know the “official” mushroom festival takes place in November, but the mushrooms follow their own schedule. The recent warm rains at the start of December have given a big push to the fungi, and you can practically see them pushing up out of the ground. Every time we’ve gone out lately walking with the dogs in the forest, we’ve seen vehicles pulled out along the roads, with the people swarming the forest gathering mushrooms. This is a really quiet time here on the Mendocino Coast leading up to Christmas and the New Year, but it’s actually a great time to visit (unless you get caught in a big storm). Between the mushrooms and the onset of the big waves, it’s a fun time to be outside. Within the next week or two, I expect to hear the first reports of whales being sighted along the coast.
