Celebrate Day of the Dead with Friends of Hospice
Thursday, October 4th, 2018 by nancy

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is an important holiday in Mexico – a joyous occasion for remembering loved ones who have passed. This festival has been celebrated for over 3,000 years and ceremonies have evolved through time. Current traditions include placing sugar skulls to decorate gravestones and creating personal altars adorned with candles, flowers and sometimes edibles.

Friends of Hospice are sponsoring an altar walk beginning October 1st that will guide you to local businesses where altars are on display. You can download a map of the walk, or pick one up at the Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce. You can view altars made by community members at the Fort Bragg Library. If you become inspired, you can attend a class sponsored Friends of Hospice and make your own.

Lens Tour at Point Cabrillo Light Station
Thursday, September 20th, 2018 by nancy

Saturday is your last opportunity this season to tour the restored 3rd order Fresnel lens. Once you ascend the stairs and emerge onto the platform, it’s hard to remember that you’re on the lens tour. The view from this vantage point is like none other. Once you catch your breath, turn around and fix your gaze on the magnificent lantern that, even today, acts as a guiding light for ships cruising the California coast. Learn more about the history of the station and the people who lived here on the Point Cabrillo website.

This is a family-friendly activity, but children must be at least 42 inches tall to go on the tour. There is a ½ mile walk to the lighthouse from the parking area.

Date: Saturday, September 22

Time: 10 am – 4 pm

Fee:  $5 pp

Mendocino Art Center’s Thanksgiving Arts & Crafts Fair, November 25 & 26
Thursday, November 17th, 2011 by dff

Thanksgiving Fair at Mendocino Art CenterThe Mendocino Art Center hosts the 52nd Annual Thanksgiving Arts and Crafts Fair, Friday and Saturday, November 25 and 26, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days. Thirty-nine juried artists and craftspeople from throughout Northern California will exhibit original handmade artwork in all media. The Fair is a fund-raising benefit for the Mendocino Art Center.

In what has become a North Coast tradition, the Mendocino Art Center’s galleries and workshop studios are transformed into a two-day holiday marketplace, providing residents and visitors a pleasant alternative to hectic, stressful mall shopping while supporting local and regional artists. This year’s fair showcases a wide array of unique, high quality artwork and gift items, including stained, fused and engraved glass; enameled, gold and mixed metal jewelry; original paintings and photographs; functional and decorative ceramics; sculptural work, wearable fiber art, and local art books.

Live music will be performed both days. On Friday, Bejazzled plays swing, standards and Latin dance music. On Saturday, with more of a focus on Latin music, Bejazzled transforms into Samba Jamba, playing an eclectic mix of arrangements including well-known Latin jazz and Brazilian classics, fronted by Cherie Sheraque’s dynamic vocals in English, Portuguese and Spanish. More information at www.sambajamba.com.
