Photographing at Night by Patrick Davis

Once the sun goes down most photographers put their cameras away, thinking that the best lighting has passed and it is time to call it a day. Some of us keep on shooting way into the night, living off the artificial light of a pub or the illumination of the full moon on the ocean and capturing the world in a different light. Night photography can be somewhat challenging….if you do not understand how to do it. When you understand it, a whole new world opens up for you….Let me guide you into that world!

TOPICS: How to limit Noise with a long exposure; Getting the correct exposure; Tripod techniques (yes there is a right and wrong way); HDR; Hyper focus; Flash painting

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: Warm Clothing! Come in layers, Fort Bragg can be cool and down right cold. If you are not comfortable you cannot enjoy shooting!

  • Camera- you will need a camera that you can set on full manual mode. You need to be able to control the shutter and the F-stop manually.
  • Film or digital- If you are bringing a Digital camera we will be able to look at your shots the next day and see how you did. If you are shooting Film you will have to tell us how you did after you get them back (if you are shooting film, do not throw away the packaging, it will have some useful information in it.)
  • Shutter release- it would be VERY nice to have a shutter release for your camera…it will make your life a little nicer.
  • Tripod- you will need a tripod, with a 20 second exposure you can not hand hold that.

Aug 25 – meet a 4pm at the Gallery and go till about 7 or so, then break for dinner. (Not included in the class.) After dinner, meet up and shoot till we drop. (I suspect we will go no later the 10pm, but who knows.) Aug 26 – meet at 9 am to go over and critique work. Cost: $95
