Mendocino’s Heritage Roses
Daisy MacCallum’s roses have bloomed through three centuries on the Mendocino Coast. The MacCallum House, built as a wedding present for Daisy in 1882 by her father, William Kelley (of the Kelley House). The yard is adorned to this day with the roses Daisy ordered in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, which came by boat from around the world. “Mutabilis”, an ever-blooming single petal rose whose blossoms combine colors from orange to dark pink, is one of the most beloved heritage roses due to its hardiness, constant bloom, unique color, and cooperation in providing successful starts. Daisy was generous with her roses, and the many beautiful old plants that bloom throughout town may be attributed to her. Other species, located in the yard across from the Kelley House Museum, include Duchess du Brabant and Gardenia.
